Description

The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) Standards Committee on Smart Device Communications (SDC) (TIA TR-50) will hold its next meeting at the Georgia Tech Hotel & Conference Center on April 12-13, 2010 in Atlanta.

During the meeting, professors and researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology will present their perspectives and some of their research work in related areas. The intent is to stimulate an SDC-centered discussion about possible standards gaps, and areas for which TIA could demonstrate global leadership and expertise.

TIA TR-50 is in the process of defining the main avenues of its standards work on smart devices, which are at the core of machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. “As part of this effort, TIA TR-50 is seeking advice from a wide range of sources such as industry, government, academia and other research centers,” said Dr. Jeff Smith, Chief Technology Officer at Numerex Corp (Nasdaq: NMRX) and Chairman of TIA TR-50.

The Georgia Tech presentations will start on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 3 p.m. and will include representatives from premier research organizations such as Dr. Mustaque Ahamad, Director of the Georgia Tech Information Security Center (GTISC) who will review “Security as the Foundation of Smart Device Communications”; Dr. Karsten Schwan, Director of the Georgia Tech Center for Experimental Research in Computer Systems (CERCS) who will address “Cloud Computing and the ‘Smart’ Environment”; and Dr. Mary Ann Ingram, the founder of Georgia Tech’s Smart Antenna Research Laboratory (SARL), who will talk on “Emerging Technologies in Smart Device Communications”. Attendance from individuals and organizations outside the TIA TR-50 members is encouraged. Participants will be able to tour Professor Ingram's laboratory and see a demonstration of cooperative transmission.
