Every year in conjunction with the Georgia Technology Summit, TAG showcases Georgia's Top 10 Innovative Companies of 2011. We would like to introduce you to Damballa.
Damballa is a pioneer in the fight against cybercrime, protecting enterprise, ISP and cloud networks from the devastating effects of botnets, advanced persistent threats, advanced malware, cybercrime, and other cyber threats. Patent-pending solutions from Damballa are platform and system-agnostic, protecting networks with any type of device including PCs, Macs, smart phones, as well as mobile and embedded systems.
In 2010, Damballa introduced technological breakthroughs in cyber threat security that are generating significant interest and causing security professionals to rethink their traditional view of network security.
Traditional perimeter-based defenses attempt to stop bad guys from getting into networks. But these criminal exploits are exceptionally stealthy and easily evade signature or behavior-based defenses. Once the malware is in, traditional security measures are ineffective. Damballa has turned that approach “inside out” by detecting and terminating cyber threat activity as it leaves the network. By detecting malicious communication, Damballa identifies specific compromised systems and associated malware, terminates active threats, and delivers critical forensic information.
In 2010, Damballa also took the lead in developing breakthrough technology that protects internet service provider networks and their subscribers from these advanced threats – at a network level. Traditionally, it is incumbent on the individual internet user to protect their computer by using anti-virus software, and their service provider could do little to help stop these advanced threats. With a new and innovative ISP and Cloud solution, Damballa was the first company to deploy across an ISP network, protecting Comcast’s internet subscribers from these threats through the Constant Guard program.
Damballa has four technology patents pending; some based on published academic research presented at the most prestigious security conferences worldwide. In particular, ‘Notos,’ researched and authored by Georgia Tech faculty and Damballa researchers, won the coveted Google Research Award resulting in a $150K grant to Georgia Tech - one of only five such awards granted by Google in 2010.
Damballa customers include Fortune 1000 companies, leading Internet and telecommunications service providers including Comcast, the nation’s largest ISP, government agencies and educational organizations. Privately held, Damballa is headquartered in Atlanta.
