Migration

Community Guest Blog post by By Anne Thallman

To upgrade or not to upgrade…that is the question….

Whether it is better to keep an existing company portal without the latest features and functionality or suffer weeks of enterprise-wide chaos through an upgrade may not have been the point of Hamlet’s soliloquy, but upgrading a corporate portal can be just as dramatic as avenging your father’s murder.  Well….maybe not, but the questions that arise when contemplating an upgrade are challenging and numerous.  Can you migrate all the portal customizations?  How long will the upgrade process take?  Once the portal is migrated, will I still be able to access all of my content?   While a short blog cannot and will not answer most of the questions associated with a portal migration, keep reading to find out how you can learn more to plan a successful upgrade.

A portal upgrade?  Should I panic now or later?

A portal upgrade or migration can be one of the toughest endeavors undertaken by any company.  SharePoint Server, a Microsoft product, provides many options for successful migrations; however, choosing the right upgrade option can be challenging.  The most effective scenario involves the ability to cut over from the old server farm to the new server farm, which is not always a viable option leading organizations to get creative with a migration strategy. For instance, enterprise search can serve as a migration solution by ensuring the availability of content across multiple source systems.

Got Any Tips?

As a matter of a fact, yes!

Find a trusted partner for SharePoint content migration and portal upgrades who started with the SharePoint 2003 product such as CTS and continues migration consulting with the release of SharePoint 2010. At CTS we have seen the good and the bad when it comes to SharePoint portal upgrades. It is not simply about the amount and type of customizations used in an existing company portal.  Consideration must be given to how an organization sees an enterprise portal scaling and evolving.  The experience we have at CTS helps our customers create a comprehensive roadmap to achieve a rich, collaborative portal environment and ensure success through challenging migration projects.

Through the newest Portals and Collaboration service offering, a Migration and Upgrade Roadmap, CTS defines customer content migration and upgrade needs. The CTS roadmap records the current environment, explores potential upgrade risks, and charts a migration path. A migration strategy may be as simple as a standard upgrade and system cut-over or take the shape of a multi-week project utilizing a migration tool such as Metalogix’s migration suite.
