Mobile Labs, LLC, a leading provider and innovator of cross-platform mobile application testing solutions, announced today it has been included in the list of “Cool Vendors” in the Cool Vendors in Application Development report by industry analyst firm Gartner, Inc.
Two Mobile Labs solutions were mentioned in the Cool Vendors in Application Development report, deviceConnect™ and Trust™. The deviceConnect solution is a private, internal device cloud that delivers comprehensive management capabilities for mobile devices, users, and apps in corporate test labs. deviceConnect supports organizations no matter what their test strategy is – whether testing is 100% manual, highly automated or somewhere in between.
Mobile Labs’ test automation solution, Trust, is an add-in for the industry’s leading automated testing platform. Trust uses deviceConnect to perform cross-platform automated testing on real, pristine smartphones and tablets. Trust is a second-generation mobile app testing tool that uses object-level detection and interaction rather than visual-based (optical character recognition or image-within-image) techniques. The result is more effective and efficient mobile application testing. Together these solutions address two major challenges in the mobile application testing landscape: deviceConnect securely manages and provides access to mobile devices while Trust gives Quality Assurance and testing professionals the right tool to address the complexities of testing mobile apps.
deviceConnect also transforms manual testing efficiency and management by helping testers locate the right device and the right app and to make an instantaneous connection to begin testing from any desktop in the enterprise. deviceConnect manages authorized users, available devices, and application versions available for test.
“Mobile app development and testing are quickly emerging as top priorities for IT. Mobile application testing amidst the chaos of new devices and constantly changing mobile operating systems presents an order of difficulty never before seen by IT. Our mission is to bring order to that chaotic, but all too important, function,” says Don Addington, CEO, Mobile Labs. “This industry analyst recognition confirms for us the inherent value Mobile Labs offers enterprises looking to simplify mobile application testing.”
In the Cool Vendor report, Gartner Research Director Thomas Murphy notes, “Mobile application testing is becoming a mainstream IT issue. Early mobile applications were often outsourced for development and testing, or testing services were used. While these are still important, as a mobile-first strategy moves to center stage and is coupled with a move toward agile development practices, it will be incumbent upon internal IT software testing teams to be able to test mobile applications efficiently and effectively. This will necessitate new tools that can support multiple device and operating system combinations, and that enable the effective management of those devices.”

Revolutionary, turnkey solution automates and streamlines the management and tracking of QA’s mobile devices, applications and tester activity
February 5, 2012 ‒ Atlanta, GA ‒ Mobile Labs, LLC, a leader in automated, cross-platform mobile application testing, today announces the release of deviceConnect™, an internal device cloud that delivers comprehensive management capabilities for mobile devices in corporate test labs and the apps that require testing. deviceConnect allows a group of testers located anywhere within an enterprise’s worldwide, private infrastructure to easily share a set of mobile devices for manual or automated testing of mobile apps. deviceConnect works in conjunction with Mobile Labs’ Trust™, an industry-leading automated functional and regression testing tool for mobile applications. Via its web-based console, deviceConnect provides testers with remote access to test devices—including Android and iOS smartphones and tablets—while simultaneously letting QA leaders manage the entire test pool as well as view device detail, such as each device’s name, manufacturer, model number, OS version, and apps currently loaded for test. The solution allows management to filter devices by platform, availability, apps loaded on the device and more.
deviceConnect is a second-generation, software-based device cloud that revolutionizes mobile device sharing by making it economically and physically possible for more organizations to benefit from device cloud management. Using a very light hardware footprint, deviceConnect can be rapidly deployed anywhere within an enterprise that has Ethernet connectivity, and a deviceConnect cart may be easily wheeled from location to location without the need for environment or power experts and with very brief downtime. deviceConnect is a complete solution, delivered to the customer configured and ready for use. Its simple Web-based management interface allows anyone within the organization to manage the device cloud without specialized training or tools.
Unlike public device clouds, deviceConnect’s installation inside an enterprise’s corporate infrastructure makes it highly secure. In addition, its location behind the corporate firewall makes it easy to install and manage. The solution can be remotely maintained with new releases pushed to the customer. Housed in a compact mobile cart, deviceConnect takes up a fraction of the space in a data center that other on-premises solutions occupy. This turnkey solution consists of a server, which runs the deviceConnect software, and a rack available in multiple configurations to accommodate large quantities of mobile devices, each of which has a hard wire connection to the cart’s server.
According to Mobile Labs President and CEO Don Addington, enterprise test devices are often misplaced, locked in a desk drawer over the weekend or accidentally taken with associates on vacation. When a particular device is needed to test an app and that device is missing, testing is delayed. Considering the pressure and aggressive time lines enterprise developers and testers are working under to get high quality apps deployed, missing devices create a major stop gap in the application testing process.
“By streamlining and automating the inventory management of QA’s test devices, deviceConnect solves this problem while also providing QA with an almost immediate ROI, because it improves tester productivity and efficiency. The solution also minimizes the increasing complexity associated with managing and tracking multiple tester locations, devices, platforms and operating systems,” Addington explains. “While deviceConnect was built with enterprise testing organizations in mind, the benefits extend to departments outside of QA. There are many departments within large companies that can use deviceConnect to manage mobile devices, including marketing, sales and customer support organizations.”
According to Cap Gemini and Sogeti’s fourth annual World Quality Report, “a troubling two-thirds of organizations (65%) do not have the right tools to test mobile applications and equally concerning is the 52% who do not have access to the required devices.”
Mobile Labs solves both of these problems with its solutions. Trust automates functional and regression testing for mobile applications while deviceConnect enables access to the right devices at the right time. With deviceConnect, testers can remain 100% focused on the testing process, helping to speed apps from development to end user deployment.
Testers will find it easy to locate an appropriate, available device, and administrative functions support controlling access to authorized users. Devices are easily made available simply by plugging them in to a USB cable, and administrators can control which devices are available for use. Once a device is selected, it can be used for manual testing or for object definition, script development, and automated-script testing.

New Release of Mobile Labs Trust Further Accelerates Automated Mobile App Testing Without Compromising the Device
Mobile Labs Introduces Native Object-based Scripting, Letting QA Teams Further Improve Tester Productivity
November 14, 2012 ‒ Atlanta, GA ‒ Mobile Labs, LLC, a leader in automated, cross-platform mobile application testing, today announced the release of Trust 2.0. A certified add-in to the market-leading test automation tool for Web and desktop apps, Mobile Labs Trust™ 2.0 now includes native object-based scripting, letting testers interact with individual native mobile objects, their properties and methods rather than a single app-view or page-view. Through direct, on-device interaction with the mobile app under test, Trust automates object definition by providing a precise inventory of objects and properties.
Trust’s native, object-based approach results in substantial increases to test accuracy and efficacy and improves tester productivity. For iOS applications, testers no longer have to manually define or identify objects by using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) or image matching. With Trust 2.0, testers use the same widely adopted scripting language, object repository and object identification tools they customarily use for building Web or Windows automated tests. In addition, Trust 2.0 provides powerful direct object interaction without ever compromising the device.
According to Mobile Labs President and CEO Don Addington, the capability to test on iOS devices – iPads® in particular – without jailbreaking is increasingly important for the enterprise. The Library of Congress recently granted a three-year exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) for mobile phones, temporarily allowing jailbreaking or rooting of smartphones without creating what would otherwise be considered a copyright violation. However, the exemption was not extended to tablets. Therefore, jailbreaking an iPad, for example, is not an exempted copyright violation. Jailbreaking an iPad to enable automated mobile application testing, for example, poses risk for companies. Mobile Labs anticipated this risk and, prior to the DMCA exemption, built functionality into Trust 2.0 that can test apps on all iOS devices, including iPads, without compromising the devices in any way.
Mobile Labs Trust 2.0’s object-based scripting provides exhaustive, end-to-end functional testing with the broadest possible test coverage. Tests written with Mobile Labs Trust 2.0 can exercise a more comprehensive set of methods supported by any given item or control in the user interface. Trust 2.0 gives the tester increased flexibility over which objects are identified in the user interface and how they are defined and manipulated. In addition, the tester has control over which properties (for example, position or displayed text) are used to identify the objects during the test. Moreover, added support for native mobile objects such as iOS’s rotating-wheel picker control, further extends the tester’s ability to create a truly complete test.
“In today’s increasingly mobile world, IT cannot afford to put off automated mobile app testing any longer. Given mobility’s rapid rate of change, automating the test process is the only possible path forward to delivering high-quality apps in line with aggressive enterprise deployment schedules,” says Addington. “With the release of Mobile Labs Trust 2.0, QA testing teams now have a robust tool to automate the entire functional testing process for mobile apps. Without this degree of automation, testing is inefficient, ineffective and cannot keep up with the unending influx of mobile apps and devices.”
Trust 2.0’s direct object interaction supports iPhone®, iPod touch® and iPad devices running Apple® iOS 6 with native iOS objects only. Support for direct object interaction for Android, hybrid and HTML-based objects will be available in December 2012.
